Tiki Vibes celebrates the renowed citizens of the deep... Mermaids are all around us, if you know where to look!

My daughter, when she was young, went through a “mermaid phase” just like lots of young girls everywhere. Whether real or imaginary, mermaids have always captivated those of us who live close to the ocean.

Near our home in the San Francisco Bay Area is a striking outcropping on the Pacific Coast visible from shore, jutting out mysteriously from the ocean. The large and majestic form was titled “Mermaid Rock” by my daughter - so certain we were that it must be the home of a very special ocean dweller, or perhaps dwellers (!) I imagined the mermaid at peace in her rocky home, swimming under choppy bay waters, gathering ocean floor trinkets and shiny treasure left behind by unlucky mariners... preening and sunbathing on the Rock, then diving back in just when you weren’t looking.

I have no idea what our geographers call it, but to this day we’ve always known it as Mermaid Rock. I treasure the name and the happy memories from a childhood - and the lingering hope to one day meet the mermaid there who gave us joyful hearts, and the inspiration for this song.
